UNITE to End Violence Against Women and Girls

December 3rd 2025

On the occasion of the United Nation’s International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and Girls, TRINRE Insurance stands united with the rest of the world in condemning all forms of violence against women and girls. Gender-based violence in any form violates fundamental human rights, and the devastating impact is felt not only by the victims but by families, communities, and society.

In September 2024, the Office of the Attorney General and the Ministry of Legal Affairs hosted public consultation on domestic violence.  The statistics showed a consistent increase in the number of domestic violence reports over the past five years. Assault by beating stood out as the highest reported offence, with 528 reports made in 2019, 2646 reports in 2023, and 1227 as of August 2024.  Additionally, Trinidad and Tobago has on average 30 domestic-violence related murders per year.  These alarming figures underscore the urgent need for action to prevent and respond to gender-based violence.

Violence against women and girls takes many forms, including domestic violence, sexual harassment and trafficking.  Additionally, in this age of advanced technology, social media has also facilitated various forms of online violence, including cyber harassment and bullying, cyber stalking, online gender-based hate speech, and image-based sexual abuse which inflicts psychological harm and threaten the safety of women and girls.

According to the United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed, addressing this pervasive issue requires a multi-faceted approach.  She further stated that investment in prevention, “Means creating conditions where women and girls can thrive, unburdened by the fear of violence.” It is therefore everyone’s responsibility to speak out against gender-based violence and demand more from those in authority to save the lives of women and girls.

An important ally in this fight is men, who must hold themselves and their fellow men accountable. They must be role models to young men for healthy emotional expression and champion positive attitudes towards women and girls. With their support, we stand a greater chance of winning this fight.

Recognition must also be given to organizations like The Shelter for Battered Women and Children, who despite their limited resources, continue to provide support and a safe-haven to victims.

TRINRE’s Marketing and Customer Experience Manager, Mr. Vinai Narace stated, “TRINRE remains firmly committed to providing tangible support to these organizations.” He further stated, “We all have a role to play in fostering a culture of respect, equality, and safety for everyone. It is time to move beyond words and take concrete actions that ensure no woman or girl lives in fear of violence.”
