Trinre Insurance Maintains Its Firm Stance Against Gender-based Violence

28 November 2022

As the world observes the United Nations’ International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and Girls, TRINRE Insurance continues to maintain its firm stance against gender-based violence, which has gone past being a national crisis and is now an indictment against our humanity.

Daily, we at TRINRE are saddened by acts of extreme violence as women are killed or injured by men who are often in a position of trust. For the year thus far, twenty-two (22) women have been killed by their partners.

Additionally, although the number of women exceed the number of men in Trinidad and Tobago, women are not free from harassment and abuse on the streets, in schools, public transportation or even in their own homes. During a Parliamentary Joint Select Committee on domestic violence held in May 2022 it was revealed that between March 2020 and March 2022, there were over four thousand (4000) reports of violence made by women. These statistics though jarring, still only represent a fraction of the gender-based violence that occurs in our country since so many incidents go unreported. We therefore want to encourage women and girls not to suffer in silence and to know that you are not deserving of any form of violence.

According to United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, the first step to ending violence against women and girls is, “Changing the hearts and minds of men and boys.” He further stated that, “Men created this scourge. Men must end it.” Therefore we call on all men to heed the calls of women and girls in our society for action and to strengthen their resolve to end all forms of gender-based violence.

We also recognise that it is our collective responsibility to mould emotionally intelligent young men, capable of understanding and managing their emotions in order to bringing about change.

Gender-based violence is a perverse violation of human rights and TRINRE remains committed to providing support for organisations such as, The Shelter for Battered Women and Children and the Hope Centre for Abused and Abandoned children, who work tirelessly to advocate for justice and to provide a safe haven for victims of gender-based violence.

We also want to encourage everyone to take a stand beyond the United Nations’ Sixteen (16) Days of Activism and to do their part in creating a safer society for women and girls.
